— Detail

This East Hampton deck had a decade of sun and snow on it: graying boards, raised grain, popped fasteners, and a blotchy old coating that had stopped shedding water. Stringa started with prep, because prep is the whole job on a stain package. The full 640 square feet was cleaned with a wood-safe cleaner and brightener at controlled pressure to lift mildew and gray fiber without fuzzing the boards, then allowed to dry to a moisture reading that would actually take coating. From there the crew sanded the walking surface and stair treads to knock down raised grain and feather out the failing coating, re-set or replaced every proud and backed-out fastener with coated structural screws, and swapped a handful of split and cupped boards plus one soft stair tread with matching stock. Trim, ledger flashing, and post bases were checked while the deck was open. Finish scope was two coats of premium solid-body stain in a warm taupe on the decking, stairs, and skirt, cut in by hand at the house wall, post bases, and railing intersections and back-rolled for an even film; railings and balusters were coated separately to keep drips off the fresh floor. The natural cedar tongue-and-groove porch ceiling and the timber posts and knee braces were left in their wood tone and sealed with a clear penetrating protector so the ceiling stays the warm contrast to the deck floor. Everything was cured before the grill, planters, and furniture went back, and the homeowner got the exact product and color record for future maintenance coats.
