Vinyl has come a long way. Thicker panels, insulated vinyl, and better colors hold up far better than the thin siding many homes got in the 1980s and 1990s. It's the most budget-friendly option and needs only an occasional wash.

Fiber cement, such as James Hardie, is made of cement and wood fibers. It's heavy, rigid, and non-combustible, and it holds paint well. It looks the most like painted wood clapboard, which makes it a strong choice for older and traditional homes.

LP SmartSide is engineered wood treated to resist moisture and insects. It's lighter than fiber cement, comes in long lengths with fewer seams, and has a deep wood-grain texture. We install the products of these manufacturers to their published instructions.

— Checklist

Signs it's time for new siding

  • ✓Warped, cracked, or loose vinyl panels
  • ✓Soft or rotted wood siding and trim
  • ✓Peeling paint that comes back every few years
  • ✓Faded siding that makes the house look tired
  • ✓Water stains or mold on inside walls
  • ✓Rising heating bills and drafty rooms
— Honest advice

Repair or replace?

If the damage is limited to one wall or a few boards — storm damage, a dryer vent, a downspout that overflowed — repair is often the right call. We can match many existing profiles.

If siding is failing on several sides, paint keeps peeling, or you're finding rot behind it, replacing it gives you a chance to fix the wall underneath and add a proper weather barrier. That's what really protects the house.

— Process

Our process & timeline

Most homes take 1–3 weeks depending on size, material, and how much repair we find. Fiber cement takes longer to install than vinyl.

— Before we start

How to prepare your home

  • ✓Clear a few feet around the house — grills, planters, furniture, and hoses.
  • ✓Take down pictures and shelves on exterior walls; removing siding can shake them.
  • ✓Trim back shrubs and branches touching the house so we can work safely.
  • ✓Plan where you'd like the dumpster and material drop.
  • ✓Pick your color with samples in daylight on more than one side of the house.

Siding Replacement questions

How do I get a price for siding replacement?

Every home is different, so we don't publish prices. Reach out for a quick quote — call (203) 343-8838 or send your project details, and we'll visit, look at the existing conditions, and give you a free written fixed price.

Should I choose vinyl or James Hardie siding?

Vinyl costs less and needs almost no upkeep. Fiber cement costs more, looks most like painted wood, and is non-combustible. For a long-term home with a traditional look, fiber cement is often worth it.

Can you install new siding over the old siding?

We prefer to remove it. That's the only way to find and fix rot and to install house wrap and flashing correctly.

Do you replace trim, soffit, and fascia too?

Yes. New trim and vented soffit are part of most of our siding jobs — they're where rot usually starts.

Will you replace my windows at the same time?

We can. Siding is the best time to replace windows, because the openings are open and can be flashed properly.

How long does new siding last?

Vinyl usually lasts 25–40 years, fiber cement and engineered wood 30–50 years with periodic repainting.

Can you match my existing siding for a repair?

Often, yes. Many vinyl profiles and colors are still made, and fiber cement and wood can be painted to match. We'll tell you honestly if a close match isn't possible.

Does new siding make my house more energy-efficient?

New siding over a sealed weather barrier and flashed openings reduces drafts. Insulated vinyl or added rigid insulation can help further. We'll explain the options during your estimate.
