Timing matters too. Paint needs dry wood and the right temperature to cure, so we schedule exterior work from late spring to early fall and watch for dew and rain. Sunny walls get painted after the morning sun moves off them, which helps the paint go on smoothly and bond well.
Paint is only as good as the surface under it. On older homes, we scrape and sand loose paint, prime bare wood, and fill and caulk joints before any finish coat goes on. On newer homes, washing and spot-priming may be all that's needed.
We use premium exterior acrylic paints that stay flexible as wood expands and contracts through Connecticut seasons. Darker colors absorb more heat and can fade faster on south and west walls, which is worth considering when you choose colors.
Rotted trim is replaced before painting — often with PVC trim in the spots that stay wet, like sills, corner boards near the ground, and door casings.

Touch-up or full repaint?
If paint is mostly sound and only the sunny walls or trim are worn, painting just those areas can buy a few more years.
If paint is peeling down to bare wood in many places, or the color has faded unevenly, a full repaint with proper prep is the better value. Painting over failing paint just means it fails again faster.
